Preventing Property Damage While Preparing for a Hurricane

Hurricanes are natural disasters that can cause a tremendous amount of damage to homes and businesses located along coastlines. These powerful storms are usually accompanied by winds that can reach speeds of over 155 mph. The result is extremely heavy rainfall which can cause catastrophic damage to properties located in the storm’s path. While it is a fact that no one can be 100% prepared for a hurricane because these storms are very unpredictable, there are things you can do to lessen the damage.

If you live in a hurricane-prone area, you must see to it that you secure your property in the best possible way. You can protect your windows by installing storm shutters, or by boarding them over with plywood. Straps or clamps can be used to secure the roof of your structure to your home which will give it additional strength and hopefully cut down on the damage done to your roof. Take the time to trim trees and large shrubs in your yard. Clear storm gutters and direct downspouts out and away from the foundation of your home or business. Know where in your location you can pick up sandbags. Most municipalities along the coastlines do have sand and bags available to residents, so plan ahead and know where these locations are exactly.

If you have time before a storm hits, be sure to take lawn furniture and other large items inside a garage or to the basement. Keep your eyes and ears on the local news reports in case you are told to turn off your electricity or other utilities. Be sure that you have an adequate amount of water available for drinking, cooking and sanitary purposes.

You must also have a clear evacuation plan in place. Inform everyone in the family of the plan and be sure everyone’s cell phone is fully charged prior to the storm hitting. Have medications ready as well as a fully-equipped first aid kit. Be prepared to take your house pets to a safe location long before the storm hits, as you will be occupied with leaving your home when told to evacuate, and will not have time to locate frightened animals.

Store your important papers and documents off-site as paper items are often the first things to go when a hurricane strikes, due to the floodwater and high winds. It is always a good idea to keep your important documents elsewhere if you live in a hurricane-prone area. Consider using a safety deposit box at your bank.

The 2010 hurricane season is here and it promises to be an active one. We are all hoping for the best but it never hurts to be prepared, so be sure to secure your home and property as best you can so that the damage is minimized following the storm.
